PhD Programme

The PhD programme in communication is designed to produce communication scholars and professionals who are committed to spiritual, moral, intellectual and creative excellence. The programme involves an appreciation of the Western and Islamic heritage behind the current media forms and institutions. It recognizes the importance of modern techniques in effective communication.

The Islamic input in teaching enables students to distinguish between the permissible and the not permissible creative communication activities as well as to evaluate deeply and criticize rationally the products and practices of the Western media. Specifically the programme is designed:

  • To provide students with an advanced study in communication theories, methodologies, as well as principles and strategies of communication that will enable them to become efficient communicators, media managers, administrators, and researchers.
  • To expose students to the contributions of Western and Muslim scholars in developing concepts, theories, principles, and practices in the discipline of communication.
  • To provide students with the professional skills of managing media, public relations, advertising and other communication organizations.

The PhD in Communication requires the completion of graduate coursework amounting to at least 60 credit hours, distributed as follows:

  • Core Courses (12 cr. hrs.)
  • Specialized/Supporting Courses (9 cr. hrs.)
  • Elective Courses (3 cr. hrs.)
    Total (60 cr. hrs.)
