Dr. Syed Arabi Idid was appointed Rector of IIUM on 1st June 2006. He is a professor in the Department of Communication, Kulliyyah of Islamic Revealed Knowledge and Human Sciences. He was appointed as the Dean of Research Centre from July 2001 until 31st May 2006. He was at the Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia for 22 years before joining IIUM in 1999. Before joining UKM, Dr. Syed Arabi Idid was with BERNAMA as a reporter from 1968 to 1971.
At UKM he was Head of the Department of Communication, and later as Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences.
He holds a B.A. (University Malaya), M.A. and Ph.D. (University of Wisconsin). He is a member of the World Public Opinion Research Association, International Communication Association, and Asian Mass Communication and Information Centre. He is President of Commonwealth Association for Education in Journalism and Communication.
At the local level, he was once the President of the Malaysian Communication Association and one of panel advisor at Institute of Public Relations Malaysia (IPRM). He is also a judge in selecting the best journalist organized by the Press Institute of Malaysia.
He has conducted several public opinion studies and is also involved in marketing research. His interests include conducting public opinion studies, public relations, and international communication. He has conducted courses on customer satisfaction, maintaining corporate image, and content analysis of media.
